Professor Edmund Peeler

Professor Edmund Peeler is a veterinarian with a PhD in epidemiology. He joined the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, a UK Government science agency in 2001, where he remains as the principal epidemiologist. He has run UK government and European Union funded research projects and worked a series of EU funded projects. Since 2009 he coordinated advice from Cefas to the UK government (Defra) on aquatic animal health policy and research priorities, including disease surveillance and contingency planning. He served as vice-president of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Aquatic Animal Health Standards Commission from 2015 to 2021. In this role, he revised existing and drafted new international aquatic animal health standards participated in training course. He is now a recognised specialist supporting the Commission. His research has focused on the application of epidemiology and risk analysis to support the development of aquatic animal health policy, sanitary measures and aquatic animal health standards. He has also published papers exploring processes, drivers, impact, and control of disease emergence in aquatic animals. In total, Ed has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles. Recently, his work has focused on government to government consultancies and projects supporting aquaculture and aquatic animal health system development overseas. In 2020 he was awarded an honorary professorship by the University of Liverpool and in 2024 received the WOAH meritorious service medal.
